Benik cracks double-digit mark for week to take POW nod

Penticton Vees forward Joey Benik has been named the BCHL Player of the Week for the week ending Jan. 29, the league announced on Monday.

Benik led all BCHL scorers on the week with 10 points and helped the Vees to three more wins giving them 28 straight. The Andover, Minnesota product opened the week with a goal and two helpers and a 1st Star honour against Merritt, followed with the same stat line for 2nd Star against Salmon Arm and capped things off with a second-period hat trick and an assist in a 1st Star showing against Salmon Arm.

The 5-foot-11, 170-pounder, committed to St. Cloud State for next season, now has 21 goals and 49 assists on the season, good for fourth on the Vees and fifth in the BCHL.

Honourable mentions this week go to Nanaimo Clippers goalie Billy Faust (2-1 record, 1.01 GAA, .969 sv%, 3rd Star, 1st Star), Penticton Vees forward Steven Fogarty (three goals, six assists, two 2nd Stars), Vernon Vipers defenceman Ryan Renz (five assists, 1st Star), Langley Rivermen forward Derek Sutliffe (four goals, five assists, 1st Star) and Langley Rivermen forward Mike Tebbutt (four goals, three assists, 3rd Star).
