The Canadian Hockey League today announced that Jacob Gervais-Chouinard of the Rimouski Oceanic is the Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week for the week ending January 1 after posting a 2-0-0-0 record including a shutout victory with a goals-against-average of 1.44 and save percentage of .951.
Gervais-Chouinard earned both of his wins against the highly competitive Quebec Remparts in a home-and-home series beginning Tuesday with a 4-3 shootout win in Quebec. He made 34 saves and also stopped all three Remparts shooters in the shootout claiming second star honours in the victory. The Oceanic and Remparts would play again on Friday in Rimouski and Gervais-Chouinard was perfect stopping all 24 shots in the 3-0 win earning his first shutout of the season.
Gervais-Chouinard, a 19-year-old from Sherbrooke, Quebec, is playing in his third QMJHL season and first with the Oceanic. In 31 games this season he carries a 16-11-0-0 record with a goals-against-average of 3.35 and save percentage of .891.
Also considered for the award this week was Franky Palazzese of the Kitchener Rangers and Chris Driedger of the Calgary Hitmen. Palazzese won three games for the Rangers posting a goals-against-average of 2.00 and save percentage of .944, while Driedger earned his first career shutout with 27 saves on Sunday as part of a 2-0 win over the Kelowna Rockets.
