Zach O’Brien, Sébastien Auger
and Christopher Gibson were today named the TELUS three stars of the
week for the period extending from December 31st, 2012 to January 6th,
2013.
Zach O’Brien earned the highest mention in the league for this week’s activities. The 20 year-old veteran of the Acadie-Bathurst Titan gets the TELUS first star with his electrifying performances. He recorded 12 points in only three games, which allowed him to climb to third place in the scoring standings with 62 points in 40 games. He scored six goals, as many assists and his +/- of +11 speaks highly of his effectiveness at both ends of the ice. On January 3rd, in a 6-1 win over the PEI Rocket, he recorded three assists. The next day, he was chosen the first star of the game with a 4-point night, which included 3 goals while the Titan had the upper hand over the Screaming Eagles in Cape Breton with a 5-3 score. Finally, O’Brien was again the best player on the ice in a 5-2 win over the Moncton Wildcats. He participated in all of his team’s goals, recording the sixth 3-goal game of his career. (The team record is 7 set by Thomas Beauregard). His sequence of consecutive games (166) without being penalized by the officials has been ongoing since his first game in the league, a record that keeps getting pushed to new heights – the former record was 99 straight games set by Jean Luc Phaneuf (MTL, 1973 to 1975).
The second star for this week’s activities belongs to Saint John Sea Dogs goaltender Sébastien Auger. He took part in three games where he was bombarded by an average of 43 shots. He won two of his three starts while maintaining a goal-against-average of 1.66 and a save percentage of .961. In a 3-1 win over the Moncton Wildcats on New Year’s Eve, he was chosen the first star of the game with a brilliant performance of 48 saves. He repeated the achievement in the next game with a 3-2 victory in front of strong Halifax Mooseheads crowd. His 43 saves allowed him to earn another first star in the game. The Sea Dogs became the first team since September to beat the Mooseheads in Halifax. Auger excelled once again with 33 saves in a 2-1 loss in a tough battle against the Prince Edouard Island’s Rocket. He leads all the goaltenders in the QMJHL with his total of 1042 saves so far in 2012-2013.
Finally, it’s Christopher Gibson of the Chicoutimi Saguenéens who gets the third star. The goaltender won his two starts on the road, posting a goal-against-average of 1.50 and a save percentage of ,964. In a hard-fought 4-3 win by his team in Sherbrooke, he stopped 40 of 43 shots he faced to steal the victory from the Phoenix. In addition, he was chosen the first star in Sunday’s game against the talented Blainville-Broisbriand Armada. He faced 41 shots and recorded his 3rd shutout of the season in a 1-0 win. Christopher Gibson has recorded 12 shutouts since his debut in the league. The QMJHL record is hdld by Ryan Mior (15).
