Waterloo Trade Brings New Face from Sioux City

After seeing J.T. Stenglein at his best while he was a member of the Youngstown Phantoms and Sioux City Musketeers, the Waterloo Black Hawks made a deal Tuesday to acquire the veteran forward.
In exchange for the third-year USHL’er from Greece, New York, Waterloo sent Kyle Schmidt to Sioux City.

“Stenglein provides size, scoring ability, and veteran leadership.  He is a nice compliment to our current forwards and we look forward to welcoming him to the Black Hawks,” said head coach P.K. O’Handley.  “Kyle is one of the best kids we’ve had in Waterloo.  We’re sorry to lose him, but with the Musketeers, he is likely to have different opportunities, and we wish him well.”

Stenglein is a 6’0,” 200-pound Michigan State recruit, who began his USHL career in Youngstown during the 2010/11 season.  Last year, the 19-year-old led the Phantoms with 31 goals, a total which ranked fifth in the United States Hockey League.  Early this season, Stenglein celebrated a four-goal performance against Waterloo on October 5th, an effort which remains a league-high this season.  Since being traded to the Musketeers in late November, he recorded three more goals in two games versus the Hawks.  All totaled, he has been credited with twelve goals and 14 assists for 26 points in 25 games this year.  During his USHL career, Stenglein has 44 goals and 36 assists in 123 regular season games, plus another five points in six playoff appearances.

Schmidt debuted with Waterloo last season as an affiliate.  Joining the Hawks fulltime this year, the Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, native had six goals and a dozen assists while playing in 29 of 31 contests.  Waterloo had selected Schmidt during the 2011 USHL Entry Draft.
