The United States Hockey League announced the CCM and Reebok player awards for the 21st week of the 2012-13 USHL regular season.
Award winners include Jake Guentzel of the Sioux City Musketeers who has been named CCM Forward of the Week; Ed McGovern from the Sioux Falls Stampede, selected as CCM Defenseman of the Week; and Brendan Jensen of the Fargo Force nabbing honors as Reebok Goaltender of the Week.
Jake Guentzel, F, Sioux City Musketeers: For the
second consecutive week, the Woodbury, MN native has earned weekly
honors after recording six points (2g, 4a) in three games. On Tuesday,
he tallied a second-period power play goal and later dished out an
assist in Sioux City’s 5-2 loss to the Dubuque Fighting Saints. He then
assisted on a pair of second-period goals, including the would-be
game-winner, to help the Musketeers to a 5-3 win over the Tri-City Storm
on Friday. Guentzel put the Musketeers on the board with his 15th
goal of the season on Saturday plus added an assist to lead Sioux City
to a 3-2 victory against the Des Moines Buccaneers. The 18-year-old is
currently on a six-game point streak, registering 13 points (3g, 10a)
over that span.
Ed McGovern, D, Sioux Falls Stampede: The second-year
defenseman from Scottsdale, AZ tallied a goal and an assist and had a
plus-four on-ice rating over three games played last week. He netted
his third goal of the season mid-way through the second period and then
tallied an assist three minutes later to help send the Stampede to a 6-1
win over the Lincoln Stars on Saturday. He also finished the night
with a game high plus-three rating. Over the three games, McGovern also
helped the Stampede successfully kill off 17-of-18 opponent power plays
during the week. The 19-year-old has appeared in all 45 games for the
Stampede this season and has produced ten points (3g, 7a), while ranking
fourth on the team with a plus-14 rating.
Brendan Jensen, G, Fargo Force: The rookie netminder
had a stellar week going 3-0-0 with a 1.95 goals-against-average, and
.955 save percentage while stopping 130 total shots. Monday night in
Waterloo, Jensen turned aside a USHL career high 48 shots to lift the
Force to a 3-2 win over the Black Hawks. Friday night saw more of the
same as blocked 37, and stopped all three attempts he faced in the
shootout, to lead Fargo to a 4-3 shootout win over Waterloo. The El
Granada, CA native completed the three-game sweep of the Black Hawks on
Saturday by stonewalling 45 shots to lead Fargo to a big 6-1 win.
Jensen has won his last four starts after going winless in his previous
three. The recently turned 20-year-old is now tied for third among USHL
goaltenders with 20 wins, fourth with a .914 SV%, and is ninth with a
2.87 GAA.
